Ingeniero e inventor británico nacido en Alemania. Emigró a Gran Bretaña en 1844. En 1861 patentó el horno Siemens-Martin u horno de solera abierta (ver proceso del horno Siemens-Martin), el cual pronto se usó ampliamente en la fabricación de acero reemplazando al proceso
Bessemer. También adquirió fama y fortuna con las industrias de cables de acero y
telégrafo y fue director de la compañía que tendió el primer cable telegráfico transatlántico exitoso (1866). Sus tres hermanos también fueron ingenieros e industriales destacados. (
